The word "Novella" is Italian for "new" and what's new is novel isn't it? While there is some disagreement of what length defines a novel, novella and short story, most define the novella as having a word count between 17,500 and 40,000 or 85 to 300 pages. A novella allows for more extended development of theme and character than does the short story, without making the elaborate structural demands of the full-length book. "To reduce the novella to nothing more than a short novel is like saying a pony is a baby horse." George Fetherling.
